Best in Show

Best in Show, a mockumentary of the professional dog show circuit, takes every opportunity to laugh at the neurotic ridiculousness of it all while exposing the human drama at its core. The humor ranges from subtle tongue-in-cheek to outrageous camp. Obsessed dog owners and show staff each provide their own entertaining take on the dog [...]

Bound

Sizzlingly hot thriller, it’s smart and sexy, has mainstream production values, and features two lesbian protagonists who come out on top of the game. Corky (Gina Gershon) and Violet (Jennifer Tilly) plot to steal two million from the mob. If it isn’t the first full-fledged lesbian thriller, it’s certainly the best. Bound won’t disappoint.

Unveiled

A very good but sad movie; love, prejudice, compassion and acceptance are central to this touching film. Fariba is forced to flee Iran and the death penalty for her crime of loving a woman. In Germany, she assumes a male identity and falls in love with Anne before she tragically must return to Iran.

Seduction – Cruel Woman

This German film explores the psychology of S&M, B&D, Master and servant. A lesbian dominatrix runs a gallery show in Hamburg and ultimately must face her own desires and fears. This is one to watch more for the subject explored than for the quality of filmmaking.

Suddenly

Did you ever fantasize about on the road adventure? How about being whisked away by a pair of young lesbian outlaws at knife-point in a stolen taxi? That’s what happens to a frumpy lingerie clerk in this refreshing, original and substantive Argentine film.

FIRE

Azmi and Das are sisters-in-law stuck in loveless, unfulfilling arranged marriages. When they dare to fall in love, they unleash the fierce disapproval of their families and society. A mesmerizing, erotic, and heartbreakingly romantic film.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I’m a Futurama geek. Dream job: Futurama writer. I love Futurama. Consider yourself warned.
Matt Groening is famous for The Simpsons TV series and Life In Hell comic strip. He should be even better known for Futurama, the brilliant animated TV series he developed with [...]

Itty Bitty Titty Committee – Movie Review

ITTY BITTY TITTY COMMITTEE
Review by: Jennifer Brooks
Rating:
This is one for the teen crowd and maybe the twenty-somethings.
Itty Bitty Titty Committee is bursting with unhealthy relationship dynamics, dyke drama, and coming of age angst. The movie is juvenile, and obviously – yet ineffectively – didactic; the social theory lessons in IBTC are delivered with the [...]

All I can say is, this is 77 minutes I’ll never get back.
OK, I can say more. I must say more. I will say more.
What is it with dark, ponderously slow, fatalistic lesbian movies? Are lesbian filmmakers saying that being isolated and persecuted is good sexy fun? Is this what [...]

SOAPDISH

Rating:
This is a smart, funny, fast paced comedy. Lots of movies that just plain suck are tagged “comedies” in attempts to trick people into watching them. This isn’t one of them; Soapdish is the real deal. It’s great the first time around and has a very high repeat viewing value.

In Deepa Mehta’s powerful masterpiece, modern values challenge tradition and duty, and passion challenges asceticism. Sensuous and humorous, this exquisite film is set in India and infused with Indian religious teachings, specifically the story of Ram and Sita, where Sita must undergo a trial by fire to prove her purity.

This is a sizzling hot, masterfully crafted thriller, and among the very best lesbian cinema has to offer. There are many who claim this is not a lesbian film because even though the main characters are gay, the story isn’t about them being gay. For that point alone, I say “Thank [...]
